Welcome to Michigan Technological University’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP). We offer over 70 explorations each summer to discover and learn about various fields through hands-on laboratory, classroom and field experiences.

Our programs are organized into four groups:

  • Summer Camps: Explorations for current 6th - 8th grade students
  • Career and Adventure Explorations: Current 9th - 11th grade students
  • Competitive Scholarship Programs: Current 9th - 11th grade students
  • Courses for College Credit: Current 10th & 11th grade students

Students can attend one exploration per week and can attend for multiple weeks. A full schedule of weekend activities are available for participants enrolled for multiples weeks (see Weekend Stayovers.) Last summer approximately 900 participants attended our programs from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Monaco, Spain, Austria, Canada and Columbia.

What is an exploration?

An exploration is an intensive week-long look into a particular field or area of interest. We offer six different categories of explorations: Business, Computing, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Outdoor and Environmental Studies, and Science and Technology. In your exploration you may learn new software, rappel down a cliff, fly an airplane, cast molten metal, build a robot, produce a film, or backpack on an island...the opportunities are endless!

Explorations are lead by Michigan Tech faculty members, graduate students, and local specialists. Students spend approximately thirty-two hours exploring their areas of interest through hands-on laboratory, classroom, and field experiences.

How to enroll

Enrollment in our explorations is first-come, first-served and applications are accepted until the Sunday that the program begins (if any openings are available). We encourage students to apply early as many explorations fill quickly and are limited to 20 or fewer students.

Students can download an application or apply online:

SYP offers two enrollment choices*:

  • Live-in
  • Commuter

*Some explorations require students to live-in based on the exploration’s schedule.

Residence Halls

Youth Programs has exclusive use of one of Michigan Tech’s unique residence halls, Douglass Houghton Hall (DHH), allowing participants and staff to be housed in self-contained, secure areas.

DHH is the center of after-class activities as participants enjoy living, dining and interacting with other participants from all over the country and the world through a variety of recreational activities.

Residence hall counselors live with the participants (approximately one per ten participants), provide evening supervision, and direct the recreational activities. The residence hall features laundry facilities (minimal fee), a recreation room, and a television lounge.

Roommate Requests

DHH is divided by gender, and we take great care to match participants with a roommate who is close in age, but from a different place. We encourage participants to broaden their horizons and room with someone new. However, some participants request to room with someone they already know. These requests will be honored whenever possible when BOTH friends request each other on their applications. If you request to room with a friend, but your friend does not request you, you WILL NOT be placed together, and it will not be possible to switch room when you arrive.

Commuters

Commuting Youth Programs participants must provide us with the local address and telephone number from which they are commuting. Commuter students are invited to attend evening recreational activities at the residence hall. Evening activities are a huge part of our programs and enjoying the college experience for the week.
