Scholarship to Keweenaw Student for Aquatic Ecology Field Study at Gratiot Lake
One scholarship will be awarded to a Keweenaw or Upper Peninsula student for Aquatic Ecology: Field Study at Gratiot Lake, by the Gratiot Lake Conservancy. Study the ecology of Gratiot Lake, the largest inland lake on the Keweenaw Peninsula. This exploration is designed to be a hands-on, field-based learning experience, offered in conjunction with the Gratiot Lake Conservancy. You will live in a rustic log cabin at Gratiot Lake.

Do the work of a field biologist. Explore such topics as biome borderlands, watershed ecology, biodiversity, food and medicine in the forest, and animal behavior and habitat. Take a Closer Look at : Upper Michigan Wolf Ecology
Come study wolf ecology through field observation! You'll track wolves on foot using radio telemetry, prints, and other signs in some of the most scenic, rugged terrain of upper Michigan. The wolves of this area can be very elusive, but we will get an idea of what this top carnivore's life is like by hiking off the trail, locating old wolf dens, and possibly locating the remains of past prey. We'll see how the recently re-established wolf fits into the area's ecological system by learning about Michigan Tech's ongoing winter wolf predation study. We'll analyze bones from deer that wolves have killed to gain insight on deer conditions in this area. In addition, we'll make track casts of different species and learn other observational skills that apply to all wildlife field research. In the field, you'll learn orienteering skills by navigating with only a map, compass, and GPS!

Be prepared for long hikes (up to 8 miles per day) and possibly very buggy conditions.

For more information, please visit the following web site: http://youthprograms.mtu.edu/syp/display_exp.asp?exp=1344 For more information information or to sign up for this course, contact our office at 888.773.2655 or email: yp@mtu.edu

SPACE SCIENCE ROCKETRY at MICHIGAN TECH
Michigan Tech is excited to offer two courses in Space Science Rocketry for summer 2007.

The human race would not have been able to land on the moon or orbit the Earth had it not been for the launching power of rockets. Using tons of fuel for combustion, rockets form an essential part of every manned or unmanned space trip. How high does a rocket travel? What is its trajectory? What should its initial speed be? -These are only a few of the most important questions that engineers have to figure out very accurately before launch. In this exploration you will get a chance to build your own rockets using engines instead of fuel, modifying and improving the traditional rocket kit, and do some of the very same calculations that a control center does. In the end, you'll launch your rockets and compare their results to actual calculations by measuring speed and altitude using a stop watch, clinometer, and rocket math.

It IS rocket science--so come join us!!
